WATCHING HIS OLD furniture go up in a blaze was much more fun than Jet would have expected. With the house completely cleared out and the doors and windows open to the summer breeze, he was beginning to see the potential.
Once theyâd piled everything fit to burn in the pit out back and washed up, Jet gave the guys a sandwich-making lesson, creating a masterpiece for Clara as his example. Then he lit the fire, which scared the emus enough that everyone could eat their lunch in peace, without fear of a bird butting in.
The best part of the day turned out to be Clara. She had enjoyed the sandwich heâd made her, laughing at the antics of the boys and the emus. It was remarkably easy to have her there. Her natural sociability rubbed off on him, and he found himself making jokes and relaxing in her presence.
Over the last week, heâd come to recognize that Clara had two primary moods. Most of the time she was happy and laughing. Her face relaxed, her movements easy, the adorable dimples of her smile flexing. Other times heâd seen her tense up. In those moments she went on the defensive and seemed to struggle to regulate her breathing.
But she was obviously having a good time clearing out the old shack.
Once the boys had doused the last of the embers, heâd helped Clara up into his truck to take her back to town in time for her appointment. His high school self would have felt like this was a lifetime achievement, opening the door for her, taking her hand as she climbed up into the passenger seat. But then Manuel had come running over and asked if they could drop him off at his familyâs grocery store on their way into town.
So Jet had finally taken a drive with Clara riding shotgun in his truck. There just happened to be a large, talkative lineman sitting in between them.
With all the excitement of the morning, Clara was running late for her meeting. Fortunately, it was with Michael, who agreed to meet Clara at her house. He was waiting for them as Jet pulled up. Clara popped out of the truck, cheerfully greeting him, and explaining away her disheveled appearance.
As Clara and Michael chatted, Jet took in the color-coordinated flower bed, perfectly refurbished furniture on the little front porch and a cream-colored Schwinn leaning up against the railing. There was no mistaking who lived here.
âJet, you want to see a picture of a woman I might fall in love with next weekend?â Michael asked.
âSure.â
âCome on in,â Clara said, heading to the door.
âIn your house?â Jet asked, before looking around for something to bang his head against. The depth of stupidity this woman could stir from him sometimes was impressive. Get it together, man.
âThatâs where I keep my stuff.â
Michael patted him on the back as he moved into the house.
Jet followed them into a room that could only have been decorated by Clara. Pale pink, spring green and warm cream colors ran throughout.
